The 2026 Toyota bZ4X is a transformed electric SUV. Significant price cuts of up to $10,000, a larger battery, up to 591 km of WLTP driving range in the entry-level 2WD, and a brand new Touring flagship with 280 kW of power make this the strongest EV proposition Toyota has brought to Australia.

With the range starting at $55,990 before on-road costs, the bZ4X now undercuts the Tesla Model Y on price while offering a longer claimed range, Toyota's five-year warranty, and a 10-year battery warranty. For buyers who've been waiting for Toyota to deliver a genuinely competitive electric vehicle, the wait is over.

Three variants are available: the bZ4X 2WD, bZ4X AWD, and the all-new bZ4X Touring. All arrive in Australian showrooms from May 2026.

What Is The Toyota bZ4X?

The Toyota bZ4X is a mid-size, five-seat, all-electric SUV built on the e-TNGA platform. It's Toyota's first dedicated battery-electric vehicle for Australia, sitting alongside the RAV4 in size but offering a fully electric drivetrain with zero tailpipe emissions.

The "bZ" stands for "beyond Zero," reflecting Toyota's vision for a future of carbon neutrality. The bZ4X shares its platform with the Subaru Solterra, though each brand has tuned its version independently for its own market.

Trims, Powertrains And Pricing

bZ4X 2WD ($55,990 Plus On-Road Costs)

The entry-level bZ4X is powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 165 kW and 266 Nm, driving the front wheels. A 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery delivers a WLTP driving range of up to 591 km, with an official energy consumption figure of just 13.8 kWh/100km. That's one of the most efficient figures in the mid-size EV segment.

The 2WD reaches 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and comes well equipped with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Toyota Safety Sense, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, and a fixed panoramic roof.

bZ4X AWD ($67,990 Plus On-Road Costs)

The AWD variant adds a second electric motor on the rear axle for a combined output of 252 kW and 337 Nm. WLTP range is 517 km, with energy consumption of 16.0 kWh/100km. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 5.1 seconds.

Beyond the dual-motor drivetrain, the AWD adds heated and ventilated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a digital rear-view mirror, a 14-inch touchscreen (up from 12.3 inches), a nine-speaker audio system, wireless phone charging, and a 1,500 W vehicle-to-load (V2L) inverter.

bZ4X Touring ($69,990 Plus On-Road Costs)

The Touring is the headline addition for 2026. It's a stretched, more practical version of the bZ4X with 140 mm of extra length behind the rear axle and a more upright tailgate. This lifts boot capacity from 452 litres to 550 litres and adds more rear-seat headroom, making it a stronger choice for families.

Under the skin, the Touring is powered by twin 167 kW motors (one per axle) for a combined output of 280 kW, making it the most powerful passenger SUV in Toyota's Australian lineup. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes just 4.4 seconds. The same 74.7 kWh battery provides a WLTP range of 488 km.

The Touring gets unique exterior styling including 20-inch black alloy wheels, front and rear skid plates, ladder-style roof rails rated to 70 kg, matte black wheel arches and bonnet insert, and a rear window wiper. Inside, buyers can choose an exclusive khaki synthetic leather upholstery alongside the standard black option. It also carries all the AWD's premium equipment plus a unique Daylight Bronze exterior colour option.

Range And Charging

All three bZ4X variants share the same 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, but range varies by drivetrain and weight:

• 2WD: Up to 591 km WLTP (13.8 kWh/100km)
• AWD: Up to 517 km WLTP (16.0 kWh/100km)
• Touring: Up to 488 km WLTP

Real-world testing by Australian reviewers has returned impressive efficiency figures. CarExpert recorded 14.4 kWh/100km over several hundred kilometres of mixed driving in the 2WD, while CarsGuide saw 14.4 kWh/100km in the AWD during mostly urban conditions.

DC fast charging peaks at 150 kW across the range, with a 10-80% charge taking approximately 30 minutes. AC charging has been doubled to 22 kW (three-phase), bringing a full charge down to approximately 3.5 hours from a compatible wallbox.

Toyota is also offering private buyers through the Toyota Go loyalty program a choice between a complimentary 7 kW Jet Charge home charger or a 12-month/625 kWh Chargefox public charging voucher throughout 2026.

Design And Cabin

The bZ4X wears Toyota's modern EV design language with a sharp front fascia, slim LED headlights, and a flowing roofline that tapers toward the rear on the standard model. The Touring takes a more upright approach at the back, giving it a more traditional SUV silhouette.

Inside, the cabin is clean and driver-focused. The instrument cluster sits above the steering wheel (rather than behind it), which Toyota says reduces the need for the driver to shift their line of sight from the road. The central touchscreen (12.3 inches on the 2WD, 14 inches on AWD and Touring) handles infotainment, navigation, and vehicle settings, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range.

Materials are durable and well-assembled. The AWD and Touring grades elevate the interior with heated and ventilated front seats, a digital rear-view mirror, wireless phone charging, and a fixed panoramic roof that floods the cabin with natural light. Four levels of regenerative braking are accessible via steering wheel paddle shifters, allowing drivers to fine-tune energy recovery to suit their driving style.

Boot space is 452 litres in the standard bZ4X and 550 litres in the Touring. Rear seats split 60:40 across all variants.

Technology, Safety And Ownership

Safety

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across all bZ4X variants. This includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane trace assist, road sign recognition, and automatic high beams. The 2026 update adds blind spot monitoring with safe exit assist and rear cross-traffic alert to the 2WD (previously AWD-only).

A driver monitor camera has also been added across the range for 2026, along with front and rear parking sensors and a surround-view camera.

Warranty And Ownership

Toyota backs the bZ4X with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre new vehicle warranty. The hybrid/EV battery receives a 10-year, unlimited-kilometre service-activated warranty, plus eight years and 160,000 km of coverage against battery degradation. This is one of the most comprehensive battery warranties in the segment.

Capped-price servicing is available, with intervals every 12 months or 15,000 km.
