Australia’s Best Automotive Brand for 25 Years
It somehow seems fitting that the first Toyota in Australia was the LandCruiser. Arriving in 1958, it was imported as a workhorse, and fast became a nation builder.
In 1963, while the LandCruiser continued to gain popularity, the first Toyotas to be assembled in Australia began rolling off the production line at Melbourne’s AMI-Toyota factory.
It’s now 2022, and Toyota has been Australia’s best Automotive brand for the last 25 years. And while the past tells an inspiring story of Toyota’s rise to Aussie motoring icon, Toyota is only ever looking forward.
Toyota’s Pledge of Even Greater Customer Focus
Toyota is celebrating 25 years as the best-selling automotive brand in Australia. Vice President Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said, "We will freshen our existing line-up with the upgraded RAV4 range early this year, the Corolla Cross SUV, and second-generation GR86 sports car…and the 70 series Cruiser…”
Toyota is the leading brand across several automotive segments in Australia, and its models such as Corolla, Camry, Hilux, and LandCruiser spearhead Toyota’s path forward. It’s Toyota reliability, and the continued focus on creating a favourable driving experience that drives Toyota’s expansive market share which currently sits above 20%. And it’s the HiLux that just so happens to be the leader amongst leaders.
The unbreakable Hilux is Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the 6th consecutive year, and it’s not surprising. Toyota understood Australia’s love affair with the ute and took it to the next level by equipping it for our new obsession for off-road adventure - with style and comfort. Australians are drawn to the go-anywhere independence of its off-road prowess.
It’s coupled with robust functionality, reliability, and rugged versatility that’s been tempered with classy appointments and sedan-like cabin comfort and connectivity. There’s a Hilux ideally suited to the active outdoors family, commerce and industry, trades, and off-road adrenaline seekers.
The Enduring, Economical and Ever-Reliable Corolla
For 9 consecutive years, the Corolla has been Australia’s best-selling passenger car. Available in a sedan and hatchback, you can also select petrol or hybrid. The Corolla model line-up consists of Ascent Sport, Ascent Sport Hybrid, SX, SX Hybrid, ZR, and ZR Hybrid. The Corolla is packed with standard tech and safety features, including Toyota Safety Sense, a touch-screen infotainment system for connectivity and modern convenience, and a sporty, compact stature, with upscale cabin appointments.
Its famous economy remains, with hybrid achieving an astonishing 4.2L/100km – ideal for a spirited, yet carbon frugal urban commute.
The Toyota Camry. Unbeaten in The Medium Car segment for 28 Years
Camry guests can select a hybrid or petrol Ascent, or Hybrid Ascent Sport, SX, or the top shelf SL. Given its appeal across such a broad demographic, Camry offers a variety that is achieved via subtle nuance between models, ensuring accessibility to a wider range of budgets.
The Camry is bursting with driver-centred features including Toyota Safety Sense for peace of mind, Toyota Connected Services for emergencies, and the convenience of 60/40 split rear folding seats for luggage versatility. With the Ascent Hybrid achieving 4.2L/100km, it’s also carbon conscious and highly economical.
When Australia met the RAV4 in 1994, it was nothing short of a revelation. Its first year saw sales of 1,350 units across all models, as Australian drivers began to embrace its spirit of fun and access in a compact unit. The RAV4 is now Australia's best-selling SUV, selling an astonishing 35,751 cars.
Interestingly, and on a positive note for the carbon-conscious, 72.3 percent of these RAVs were electrified. This added another feather in the Toyota cap and Australia’s green credentials as the RAV4 became Australia's top-selling hybrid-electric vehicle.
RAV4 is the epitome of fun on 4 wheels. Compact, yet spacious, the finely appointed cabin comfortably seats a family of five. Advanced connectivity, generous luggage space, and 1.5-tonne towing capacity enhance its go-anywhere spirit, making it perfect as a city commuter and country explorer.
The RAV4 is available in petrol and hybrid with a 2WD for the economically minded or the AWD for ultimate traction and handling. The AWD averages 4.8 l/100km, further highlighting Toyota’s commitment to helping motorists reduce their carbon footprint.
The Legendary LandCruiser
The first Toyota in Australia, the Legendary Cruiser had its biggest year ever with 47,932 sales. There were individual records for the Prado, selling 21,299 units and 70 series selling 13,981 across its multiple variants.
The Toyota LandCruiser is the ultimate 4WD whichever model you choose. The 70 series remains a tradies dream, doubling as a nationwide explorer frequently fitted out to become the ultimate off-road touring vehicle. The 300 series will tow 3.5 tonnes of anything anywhere, suitable for the most remote, inaccessible regions of Australia, yet polishes up for city luxury and a commanding street presence.
The Prado takes a little of something from its bigger brothers, yet forges its own identity as a streetwise family wagon, and rugged trailblazer, capable of traversing the most hostile terrain Australia can offer.
